Description

The corresponding Critical Commentary is contained in Volume III/2 (EB 9471).

The chorale based organ works include the great chorale fantasias, but also traditional compositional forms such as the chorale variation and the chorale ricercar. The two compositions of the "Magnificat primi toni" belong to the genre of the chorale toccata, in which toccata sections and fugues alternate. The chorale preludes, with their expressive figurations in the upper voice and fugal interludes, belong to Buxtehudeʼs late works.

The chorale-bound organ works have again been divided into two volumes for convenience. It is a critical source edition, in which the music text has been prepared for practical use; for example, great attention has been paid to good legibility through flexible distribution of the voices on two or three staves and convenient page turns. The comprehensive text apparatus (in volume III/2) contains, in addition to the critical report, detailed information on notation, ornamentation and the organs at the places of Buxtehudeʼs activity in Denmark, Sweden and Lübeck.
